In December 2005, the Forest Service published the Travel Management Rule (TMR) requiring each individual forest to designate roads, trails and areas authorized for motor vehicle travel. Each forest will involve a variety of agencies and interested parties in this designation process.
The Tonto National Forest has six districts which will each be designating routes and areas. The attached Route Designation Process flow chart diagrams the process for the designations. The chart below shows each district's target date and where it is in the Route Designation Process.

# Mesa Ranger District plans to move its target date to coincide with Cave Creek Ranger District.

Tonto Basin Ranger District is completing its environmental analysis summer, 2007 and is scheduled to print their Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) by September 2008.
Cave Creek and Mesa ranger districts are analyzing possible changes to their existing travel management. The two districts will be holding public meetings together in early fall. Public meetings will be announced and posted on our website. The districts plan to print their MVUMs by September 2008.
Globe Ranger District will begin the Route Designation Process fall, 2007 and is scheduled to complete the process and print its MVUM by September 2008.
Payson and Pleasant Valley ranger districts are currently working with those interested to identify changes to their existing travel management system. The districts plan to print their MVUMs by March 2009.
